Our organisation exists because of the work of many volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours to building WikiLeaks from the ground up. As you may have heard I am facing arrest in the United Kingdom in relation to extradition attempts by Sweden and probably the US.

Cablegate: 250,000 US Embassy Diplomatic Cables

On Sunday 28th Novembre 2010, Wikileaks began publishing 251,287 leaked United States embassy cables, the largest set of confidential documents ever to be released into the public domain. The documents will give people around the world an unprecedented insight into the US Government's foreign activities.

The 391,832 reports ('The Iraq War Logs'), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by soldiers in the United States Army. Each is a 'SIGACT' or Significant Action in the war. They detail events as seen and heard by the US military troops on the ground in Iraq and are the first real glimpse into the secret history of the war that the United States government has been privy to throughout.

Video: Collateral Murder

WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff. Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded.

WikiLeaks ; Love it or Hate it, but Save it

Different sections of the world have given different responses to the diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks. America has demonized it. Chinese have blocked it. Iran called it as mischief. Russia called it ridiculous. Amazon shuts its internet servers. PayPal closed its financial account.

But, the people of the world, especially the Internet population, are voicing their protest on every platform to defend and save WikiLeaks and importantly, the concept of wikileaks.

The huge, global and diverse response from netizens shows how the people especially the youth, feel so disconnected with the way, their governments conducted foreign policy. This disconnection is due to the realisation of the much suspected truth that governments say one thing to their people and do something else.

Though the Governments, especially those involved in cable talks and those who need American financial aid, will continue to criticize WikiLeaks, the media-watchers and public-policy researchers, should use this opportunity and study the people’s response to the information supplied by wikileaks.

This release of information is also a Journalistic benchmark, because the information (the transcripts) is directly placed before the people and thereby asking them to be the judges of their government & its governance. This is unlike the modern-day newspapers and television channels, where the journalists and editors filter news, to suit advertising demands and consumer needs.

Not surprisingly, there has been calls from American public to shut it down, because of diplomatic secrecy, that has to be protected in genuine American interest. But the world is not about America. World is not about what America wants, does or needs. As a fan of  U.S.A., its open culture and efficient government, I’m glad that U.S. Government plays a positive role in many areas of global affairs. But, that doesnt mean American diplomats can simply come here and tell us what we should do and not do. Its time American Government starts seeing American interest within the context of global interest.

WikiLeaks should be saved, if democratically elected governments should thrive and let their decisions reflect what their people desire. WikiLeaks should be saved, if we want transparency in how countries talk to one another. WikiLeaks should be saved, if  freedom of Internet, should continue to be free.

This is no longer about one man’s quest to open governments. This is about us and the new world order, of  justice and fair-play, we seek to establish.

JURNALIST UNITE SAVE WIKILEAKS

A campaign to save the notorious whistleblower website, Wikileaks, is garnering support from publications around the world.

The Guardian and The Spectator are among the titles that have run editorials urging people to donate to keep the website running after it was crippled by its own running costs.

It was reported on 25 January that PayPal had suspended fundraising for the site but The Register has since reported that this was a glitch "triggered by anti-money laundering systems". However, just days later, Wikileaks announced it had had to suspend its own operations because of lack of financing.

In a post on its site, the Wikileaks team is appealing for donations: "We have received hundreds of thousands of pages from corrupt banks, the US detainee system, the Iraq war, China, the UN and many others that we do not currently have the resources to release. You can change that and by doing so, change the world. Even $10 will pay to put one of these reports into another ten thousand hands and $1,000, a million.

"We have raised just over $130,000 for this year but can not meaningfully continue operations until costs are covered. These amount to just under $200,000 per annum. If staff are paid, our yearly budget is $600,000."

The website is run by The Sunshine Press -- a "non-profit organisation funded by human rights campaigners, investigative journalists, technologists and the general public." Its past scoops have included publishing a list of names and addresses of people said to belong to the British National Party (BNP) in October 2009, and the revelation of e-mail exchanges involving US politician Sarah Palin after her account was hacked. Its work was recognised with the 2008 Economist Freedom of Expression Award as well as the 2009 Amnesty International New Media Award.

A Facebook group, which had 1,223 members upon last check, has now been set up to save Wikileaks. In addition, journalists are urging their readers to donate.
Emily Butselaar of the Guardian writes: "Wikipedia democratises news and information, allowing the public to access secret information that once would have been limited to the chateratti. For fear of compromising its integrity Wikileaks doesn't accept funding from corporations or governments. Instead, it relies on the public. If you want to read the exposés of the future, it's time to chip in."

Martin Bright of the Spectator adds: "As the UK libel laws continue to bite, Wikileaks remains one of the few places to defend genuine freedom of speech. I know money is tight, but I urge anyone who cares about liberty to visit the site and donate."

The Wikileaks team has promised that the website will "be back soon" but needs to cover its operating costs before this can happen.

Its website, launched in 2006, is run by The Sunshine Press. Within a year of its launch, the site claimed a database that had grown to more than 1.2 million documents.
